The global fitness and health club industry was worth nearly 160 billion in 2021. That’s huge, but the future is even brighter. The fitness industry is expected to grow 172 percent to 434.74 billion by 2028!
Part of the current growth is from COVID-fatigued clients who have missed the social interaction and motivation from group fitness classes. In a recent study, 80 percent of consumers who stayed away from the gym during COVID said they’re ready to get back to the gym again. Around 40 percent who’ve always worked out at home said they want to switch to a gym.
But it’s not just COVID recovery that is pushing the growth. A Nielsen survey found that while 61 percent of Boomers regularly exercise or try to, that number jumps to 81 percent for Millennials. This younger group is increasingly driving consumer spending, and their spending in the fitness industry is part of it.
On the other end of the age spectrum, the senior segment (some prefer to call it the active-aging segment) is another growth area that is important and growing. People 60 and up are becoming more aware than ever of the importance of fitness to their quality of life ahead.
